These atomizers are often slangily referred to as "drippers" or "dripping", which is derived from the translation of the word dripping. This type also contains a spinning base in its centre to accommodate the coil and cotton, but this is enclosed directly by the atomizer body (topcap) and thus contains no reservoir for e-liquid. However, this offers more space for handling a spiral or multiple spirals.
Instead of refilling the e-liquid into the tank, the spiral with cotton wool has to be manually dripped repeatedly after removing the topcap or, alternatively, directly through the mouthpiece if it is wide enough and the spiral is directly underneath it.
Due to the design, the most common air inlet is through side openings, allowing direct access to the coils without obstruction. For this reason, RDA atomizers are very popular as the subsequent flavour delivery is clean, full and perfectly delineated.
They are therefore often used for tasting new e-liquids, but their die-hard fans can't afford them for everyday use either.
